FLIGHTS AND TRANSPORTATION
Erbil's airport offers direct flights from several international destinations. A short drive from the city center, Erbil's airport provides the most convenient arrival option for most participants. Many hotels, including the Divan, will arrange transport to and from the airport.
In addition to the Divan Hotel, Erbil offers several four- and five-star hotels, including international chains such as Rotana.
Nationals from certain countries can receive visas for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on arrival in Erbil, including visitors from the US, UK, and UAE. A visa from the Government of Iraq is required to travel to Baghdad or other parts of Iraq.
The Iraqi Dinar (IQD) converts to approximately 1,200 IQD to 1 US dollar. Most shops and restaurants accept US dollars, however, many establishments are cash-only. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants, and secure ATMs are available at hotels.
Kurdish is the official language in Erbil and Arabic is widely spoken as well. Staff of major hotels and establishments generally understand and speak English.
Mobile phone and internet services in Erbil are available and stable, including international roaming services (depending on network plan).
Erbil, and surrounding areas of the Kurdistan Regional Government are among the safest areas in Iraq. There is freedom of movement within the city and safe to use taxis or to walk. Crime against foreigners is rare and Kurdish security services have maintained a largely safe environment throughout the region. As in any large city, basic precautions should always be taken.
